Baekrokdam Acne Treatment Guide

What changes should we monitor during acne treatment?

Rather than being swayed by the redness in the mirror every day, observe the weekly number of new breakouts, changes in deep and painful acne, and the interval at which acne reappears in the same spot. Do not dismiss dryness or stinging as a stage you must endure; report them along with the medication used. During Korean herbal medicine treatment, we also monitor changes in sleep, digestion, bowel movements, and menstruation alongside skin changes to adjust the intensity and direction of the prescription.

Compare the number of new acne breakouts and deep-seated acne on a weekly basis

Using photos taken under the same lighting, count comedones, red inflammation, pus-filled acne, and deep nodulesbreakouts separately. Check not only the speed at which existing acne fades, but also the number of new breakouts and whether painful acne is decreasing.

Distinguish between red marks, brown marks, and pitted scars

Flat red marks and brown marks are different from active inflammation or the pitted scarsskin surface. Since marks may appear more prominent while new inflammation decreases, do not count them in the same category. Discuss separate treatment timing for structural changes such as pitting or protrusion.

Please report dryness, stinging, or unexpected changes immediately

Dryness may occur in the early stages of treatment, but do not simply endure severe swelling, blisters, oozing, or pain that interferes with daily life. Possibility of pregnancy, as well as safety-related changes such as taking new medication or mood changes, to the medical staff immediately.

Herbal medicine prescriptions are adjusted according to changes in the skin and body

Whether red inflammation and facial heat have decreased, Sebumand whether stinging or dryness remains, and if digestion, bowel movements, sleep, or the period before/after menstruation change along with the acne. Do not decide on dosage increases or prescription changes yourself; the current response and the next check-up time will be determined during the medical evaluation.

Compare the rate of new acne breakouts rather than the redness seen in the mirror

Skin color can vary daily depending on lighting and condition. When comparing before and after treatment, look at the number of new acne breakouts and the skin's tolerance level over a week.

Count new small bumps (closed comedones) and deep inflammation separately

Counting all acne as a single number masks the changes. By separating small comedonesbumps, red inflammation, and deep, painful acne, it is easier to see what is decreasing first.

Once a week, keep photos taken under the same lighting and record the number of new acne breakouts.

Has sebum decreased, but the skin become stinging and dry?

A reduction in sebum alone does not mean the treatment is a good fit. We also check the tolerance level for cleansing and topical treatment, comfort after moisturizing, and the presence of redness and dead skin cells.

Rate the stinging sensation after cleansing, applying medication, and moisturizing on a scale from 0 to 10.

Observe the sequence of jawline recurrence in relation to menstruation and sleep

We monitor over several weeks whether acne recurs just before menstruation, after working overtime, or when digestion is unstable. Herbal medicine prescriptions are adjusted by observing these changes alongside the acne.

Please indicate changes in sleep, heat sensation, or bowel movements that occur before changes in your acne.

Changes to monitor during treatment

  • Number of new acne breakouts per week
  • Number of deep, painful acne breakouts
  • Recurrence interval in the same location
  • Dryness, stinging, and comfort level after cleansing
  • Temporal relationship with menstruation, sleep, and digestion

PapulesA papule is a red and painful type of acne that is a small, firm, red elevation of the skin without visible pus.PustulesA pustule is a red, painful type of acne where white or yellow pus is visible in the center of a raised red bump.NodulesNodules are large, hard, and painful inflammatory acne that form deep within the skin. It is advisable to have them evaluated early as the risk of scarring may increase.Post-inflammatory erythemaPost-inflammatory erythema refers to flat red or pink marks that remain where acne inflammation has subsided. It is different from pitted scars.Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentationPost-inflammatory hyperpigmentation refers to flat marks that remain brown or grayish-brown due to increased melanin after acne or irritation has subsided.Atrophic acne scarsAtrophic acne scars occur when the skin tissue does not sufficiently recover after inflammation, leaving the surface indented. They are different from flat red or brown marks.Acne ByeonjeungByun-jeung is a Korean medicine diagnostic process used to determine the direction of Korean herbal medicine prescriptions. It examines how heat, sebum, dryness, and pain differ even for the same type of acne, and whether digestion, sleep, and menstrual status change repeatedly when acne worsens.

Reasons for considering herbal medicine treatment

Herbal medicine treatment is adjusted by observing both the appearance of new acne and the skin's tolerance level

We do not keep the same prescription fixed. We determine the direction of the current prescription and the next follow-up timing by observing changes in red inflammation, facial heat sensation, sebum, dryness, and the periods before and after digestion, bowel movements, sleep, and menstruation.

Acne

Rate of new inflammation

We monitor the number of new acne breakouts per week, deep and painful acne, and the Recurrence recurrence interval in the same location.

Skin

Sebum and barrier recovery

We check not only oiliness but also whether dryness and stinging after cleansing or applying medication are reduced.

Body

Changes in body condition occurring at the same time as acne

We look for items among menstruation, sleep, digestion, and bowel movements that repeatedly change in conjunction with acne.

Please inform us immediately, without waiting for your scheduled follow-up date, if you experience severe swelling, blisters, oozing, rapidly increasing deep pain, possibility of pregnancy, or if you start taking new medication.

What changes should we monitor together during acne treatment?

Rather than being swayed by the redness in the mirror every day, observe the weekly number of new breakouts, changes in deep and painful acne, and the interval at which acne reappears in the same spot. Do not dismiss dryness or stinging as a stage you must endure; report them along with the medication used. During Korean herbal medicine treatment, we also monitor changes in sleep, digestion, bowel movements, and menstruation alongside skin changes to adjust the intensity and direction of the prescription.

The focus of treatment is on reducing the rate at which new acne forms. If there are causes that need to be addressed first, such as infection or medication side effects, those treatments take priority. For Korean herbal medicine treatment, a primary goal is set among the rate of new inflammation, sebum, heat sensation, skin barrier, sleep, and digestion, and the sequence and progress criteria for topical medications, oral medications, and extraction are adjusted accordingly. Lifestyle management is tailored to support treatment goals and ensure that cleansing, sleep, and meals can be maintained without undue strain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions Before Your Visit

If new acne appears within a few days, does it mean the treatment is not working?

It is difficult to make a judgment based on only a few days of change. However, please contact us before your scheduled check-up if deep, painful acne increases rapidly or if severe irritation occurs.

Do I need to record my weight or meals every day?

You do not need to record every aspect of your daily life. If there are recurring patterns of lack of sleep, pre- or post-menstrual periods, or digestive discomfort that coincide with when your acne worsens, simply note those specific items.

Guidance related to my symptoms

Condition GuidanceAcneAcne begins with follicular keratinization, where dead skin cells at the opening of the hair follicle clump with sebum and block the pore, and the acne-causing bacteria naturally present on the skin contribute to inflammation. Hormonal changes such as puberty or pregnancy, family history, and certain medications can increase the risk of occurrence, and skin or hair products that clog pores may also be related to acne. While diet or stress can be aggravating factors for some people, a single food or cleansing habit cannot be concluded as the sole cause of all acne.Condition GuidanceInflammatory acneInflammatory acne occurs when inflammation develops inside a clogged pore, appearing as red papules or pustules; if it deepens, hard and painful nodules or cysts may form. Rather than simply counting the number of acne lesions, we evaluate the ratio of comedones to inflammation, the number of deep and painful acne lesions, and the risk of inflammation and scarring that have developed within a week.Condition GuidanceRecurrent acne after treatmentAcne is a chronic recurrent condition that requires maintenance care even after improvement. If it reappears after pausing treatment, rather than concluding the medication was bad, we look at what returned first among comedones, sebum, or red inflammation, as well as the timing of discontinuation, maintenance treatment, and changes in products, menstruation, or sleep. Korean herbal medicine treatment does not arbitrarily stop existing treatments, but rather specifies the recurring new inflammation and the body condition that fluctuates during recurrence.Condition GuidancePost-acne red marksRed marks after acne may be post-inflammatory erythema, where vascular redness remains flat in the area where inflammation has subsided. You should check if the marks are primarily pink or red rather than brown, and ensure they are not raised or painful to the touch. However, new papules or pustules, persistent redness across the entire face, and pitted surface changes must be distinguished as active acne, rosacea, and scarring, respectively.Medical Evaluation GuideWhy topical acne medication requires observation for weeks, not just a few daysIf you continuously change medications based only on a day or two of stinging or the appearance of new acne, it becomes difficult to distinguish between irritation and changes in the original acne. Follow the recommended usage and record new acne and irritation separately in weekly intervals.Medical Evaluation GuideRed marks, brown marks, and pitted scars: which should be managed first?Flat color changes remaining where acne has subsided are different from scars where the skin surface is pitted or raised. The process of reducing new inflammation and the sequence of managing remaining marks are separated.
